Continuing the Conversation...

So, I think talking about the idea of guaranteed appointments has struck a nerve. There has been some interesting comments about it left below. Andy B. also wrote about it and a couple of other issues. What I'm aware of is that there are symptoms of underlying problems-- mostly related in our case to leadership and discerning God's will. There is language in the Discipline to deal with ineffective clergy. There is an over-arching desire by most in the church to work to make sure appointments are good matches for clergy and laity alike (we all want what's going to allow us to make disciples for the transformation of the world). And yet, it is appointment season, and cabinets are working with folks they don't know what to do with-- and will place them with Jesus-loving folks who want leadership to help them grow.
And this does not even address the justice issues raised....
Do we have the leadership to do the tough work and figure this out?

Here's what I wrote:
There is already language in place that addresses the concerns that some have expressed. Clergy are to be appointed unless, among other things, we "have failed to meet the requirements for continued eligibility" (337.1). And those requirements include "growth in vocational competence and effectiveness through continuing formation" (334.2.b). Seems to me that addresses the major concern, namely that incompetent and ineffective pastors continue to be appointed, with no check or accountability from teh conference. Continued growth vocationally is already a part of the covenant relationship of the clergy, and if that part of the covenant is not being met, the language is in place already for addressing that. Dare I say: Bishops, take thou authority! Claim that language and act on it before more Disciplinary tinkering.

I guess no one wanted to continue the conversation? :)

It's hard for me to comment coming from a denomination where we find our own jobs and have to search and apply and interview etc...

mostly I'm stopping by to see how you are feeling, when you are due, and are you watching The Riches? And if so, is it holding your attention?
