A better word?

I don't know about you, but I've needed time to recover from General Conference and I was not even there! Watching the live stream throughout the event was enough to wear me out. I can understand why it takes as much as 10-12 hours of sleep a day for at least a week to recover. Really, why doesn't General Conference have true Sabbath time? Do they really want people to be crabby when they are earnestly trying to practice holy conferencing?
My father-in-law was one of the delegates from my Annual Conference to General Conference. At a meeting last week he handed us all a packet of goodies-- a FEW of the MANY things discussed over the 10 days. Of course I wanted to know what was decided upon in regards to things like the ordination process. Dan lobbed up a juicy one to me-- the General Conference changed the word for someone commissioned, not fully ordained from "probationary," (like you're in jail) to "provisional," (clearly defined as you're temporary, don't get too comfortable). At first I was just glad to see "probationary" gone-- I hoped to never be on probation in my life or in my work-- so why did the Church decide to use that to describe folks who are in transition and learning? Provisional, while a shiny-happy term, is what in retail the seasonal hires were referred to-- don't expect to see them past New Years kind of deal.
So while I am thankful for the kinder, gentler term, I'm not sure it effectively responded to a major need to re-think and re-imagine our language, process and the like. What do you think?

I agree! Watching live stream was exhausting!! It was all I did -- I just stared at the screen trying to figure out the actual calendar item wording -- I watched in between meetings and phonecalls... and, it felt weird just to stare at the bishops all day...but, I did it anyway... just listening and learning! The last few days seemed exhausting for the delegates!

I was happy to hear that probationary membership was renamed. Whatever they call it, it will not fit. I don't think there will ever be a "good" term. I am just thankful it is not "on trial" anymore...and, I am thankful to be in "full membership" -- that felt good -

I can only imagine...our GC's always exhaust me...and then there are always the compromises...sigh....probationary or provisional...we use the terms: aspirant, postulant, candidate, and then either vocational deacon (if deacon is the call to Holy Orders) or transitional deacon (if one is aiming for ordination to the priesthood)...sigh...none of them are great terms...anyway...I hear ya...

aspirant.... gosh. That totally sounds like a hospital term.

You should have tried being there..... uh, not that I was.... but being there must have been effing insane. Painfully insane....

I just think it must have been.....

I feel pretty darn provisional, perhaps it's not a great word but an accurate term for the message that period sends.

A fellow graduate from Disciples of Christ was ordained the day after graduation.

An Episcopal classmate will be ordained this summer.

We UMC candidates stay provisional for a long time.

I watched while at GC for a week and then the live stream. Watching in person wasn't nearly as exhausting as trying to make sense of it all from the sofa.

What I did witness while there was some true and sustained HOLY conferencing, and that gives me hope.
